"Is President Ruto Banking on Outlawed Gangs for Mount Kenya Support?" ~ Cate Waruguru

January 12, 2025 | Mount Kenya, Kenya: Mount Kenya is abuzz with anticipation of President William Ruto's rumored visit. However, the discourse is overshadowed by rising security concerns and frustrations over unmet development promises.

In a fiery statement, a local representative expressed alarm over the resurgence of outlawed criminal gangs, particularly one named "Mungiki." Allegations suggest the gang may offer protection during the President’s visit, raising questions about the government’s stance on law and order.

The illegal gang group by the name Miki will be offering protection to the President and Mount Kenya leaders who decided to abandon their people and run to become a choir for William Ruto, she stated.

The speaker criticized the use of taxpayer funds for political crowd mobilization, calling for a focus on meaningful development.

We want the President to come to Mount Kenya for development—the same way we have seen him go to Western Kenya and Nyanza, launching roads, electricity, and opening industries, she said.

Mount Kenya residents feel overlooked, particularly compared to other regions benefiting from infrastructure and economic revitalization projects.

It was a painful Christmas, seeing other parents cry, begging the government to release their children.

he speaker lamented, referring to families affected by gang-related arrests.

The address also urged leaders to channel resources into community development rather than fostering illegal activities.

If they really love us, they must bring us money for development. We do not want handouts or money being poured to recruit our young men into illegal gangs like the Mungiki,” she added.

With the President's visit now imminent, many residents hope his administration will act to address concerns of youth unemployment, insecurity, and a feeling of regional economic neglect. Whether President Ruto's visit will address these calls for action remains to be seen.
