Why Kenya Gen z Are Protesting for #OccupyJKIA

Nairobi, July 23, 2024 – Kenyans have taken to the streets in defense of the #OccupyJKIA protests due to a cocktail of reasons, ranging from dissatisfaction with the current government and perceived corruption cases and controversial economic deals. These protests have been driven to address broader issues affecting the country, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) only being the spark that ignited the current unrest.

Key Issues Driving the Protests

1. Government Accountability and Corruption:

The protestors accuse the government of not upholding transparency and accountability in the management of major public assets, especially JKIA.

Further, there have been allegations that the planned takeover by a foreign company is not guided by any legal framework or adherence to due process.

Through this, critics front the argument that the deal—described at one time as a PPP—amounts to a sly takeover meant to plunder the nation's resources for the benefit of a few elites.

2. Economic Disparities:

Demonstrators raise the surging economic challenges that ordinary Kenyans are going through and which are further worsened by Government policies that they argue only serve to favor foreign interests at the expense of the local man's welfare. In this light, the airport deal transcends into symbolization of wider economic disenfranchisement felt by many citizens with huge financial commitments yet without any seeming benefits to the people.

3. Social Impact and Public Opposition:

Documents relating to the JKIA deal show that the stakeholders involved did foresee a lot of public resentment and social effects. However, the government went ahead to implement the process without considering the negative effects on the people. The perceived insensitivity to public feeling has also been the reason behind the protests, as people demand leadership that includes them and is sensitive to their feelings.

4. Legal and Procedural Concerns:

Legal experts and activists have cited several violations of the Public-Private Partnership Act and other constitutional provisions on how the JKIA deal has been handled. There is a demand letter sent to authorities, demanding publication of all documents and immediate termination of the project. Protesters indicate that it is not just against the law in many ways but it also exposes national assets for grabs with no clear reason given.

Larger Significance of the Protests

The "Occupy JKIA" movement forms a part of far-reaching struggles against what the protesters feel is systemic corruption and mismanagement in Kenya. It reflects a rising feeling of anger at the ruling class and its penchant for exploiting the country's lot. The focus on JKIA, one of the vital national infrastructural assets, shows the degree of urgency by which citizens view the need to reclaim control over their public assets.

This creates ever-mounting pressure on the government to embrace these concerns in a responsive and transparent manner. Indeed, the resultant product of such protests may well turn out to be instrumental in gigantic proportions for the political and economic future of Kenya along the path of increased public scrutiny and heightened civic engagement.
