Multiple Injured as Bus Overturns on Mombasa Road

Nairobi, July 18, 2024 – Several people have been injured after a bus traveling to Nairobi overturned next to Gateway Mall along Mombasa Road. The accident was caused when the driver, who was trying to pick a piece of cloth to wipe mist on the windscreen flowing from fog, lost control.

One passenger sitting in the front seat narrated moments before the accident. "I alerted him that we were getting off road and, in a snap, he lost control of the vehicle. He tried to get it back, but the bus overturned," he said.

He added that he was wailing from his left hand, which bled because of the accident, and how the driver and another passenger spilled on him when the accident happened.

First responders are seen in the video on social media helping those onboard who were seriously injured, as civilians attempted to turn off the still-running bus engine. "Hii gari haizimiki: ni ya wapi? Towa battery." a voice in the crowd is heard.

The onlookers also took upon themselves the work of offering security, making sure nothing was stolen or vandalized at the scene.

According to the latest data by the National Transport and Safety Authority, fatalities in road crashes have increased to 2.82% this year in comparison to a similar period last year.
