NAIROBI, 23 July 2024: The Nairobi Regional Commander Adamson Bungei became the point of anti-government protests Tuesday after protesters chanted "We are peaceful" following his address along Moi Avenue in the Central Business District.

It is during this that Bungei accompanied by a team of senior and junior police officers was patrolling the CBD when his team met a large group of protesters. Addressing the crowd, a video footage captured by The Star shows him engaging with the protesters before boarding a waiting police vehicle. As he drove away, the protesters who maintained their peaceful chants proceeded to follow him through the streets.
Though the chants were non-violent, the protests brought about a significant disruption of business activities in the CBD. Several shops did not open at all due to the expected violence, and there was a presence of police in large numbers, who were stationed along all paths strategically.
The Gen-Z-led protests have raised concerns over the disruption of daily life and business operations in Nairobi. Ag. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said in a news briefing that he fears for it, as he condemned organizers for allowing protests to turn into a haven for goons determined to steal and destroy things.
Kanja censured the organizers for not obeying the Public Order Act, which stipulates that they inform police in advance of any protests.
This state of disorder would have been completely avoidable had protesters taken into consideration the simple legal provisions under the Public Order Act that require organizers of protests or public procession to inform police or regulating officers in time, as led with the constitution, he said.
Kanja urged members of the public to be vigilant, particularly in public places, and to pass any information that would help the police forestall any crimes related to the protests.
